GEICO Refuses Home Owners With Great Danes
By admin | April 5, 2008
I am a home owner currently covered through GEICO’s Travelers Insurance Counselors, Inc. I called them to let them know I had put an alarm system on my property and wanted to upgrade to one of their policies to cover my wife’s wedding ring. After they went through the questions about my current home situation, I
also told them about the 8 month old Great Dane puppy we recently adopted from a rescue. So we now have two dogs: the Dane and one Boxer/Mastiff mix, also a rescue, which they have known about. They told me my insurance would go down in cost. Yeah, they never mentioned it was because they were dropping us. About 1 week later I got a letter from them saying because of my Great Dane and my Boxer/Mastiff mix that they would not renew my policy. Note: The Boxer/Mastiff I had mentioned when I first got the insurance in 1999.
How can a company have the right, based only on size, to refuse with prejudice one of the most lovable and friendly dogs. I searched to try to find statistics about dog bites and found an article that covered September 1982 to November 13, 2006 and it said that even the lovable Lab has bitten more people than both the Mastiff and Great Dane. And that the Husky has bitten more people than both the the Great Dane and the Mastiff combined. To view the Article Click Here
